U12 Match Report – 9th October 2011

Penkridge Junior u12 v Burntwood Dragons Green

9th October 2011

Coming off the back of four straight defeats this was going to be a big game for Penkridge, every week the team has looked strong and fearless in training yet coming into the game  on a Sunday they have been second best on every occasion, some signs of what I know they can do has been evident but this have been few and far between.

Decided this week that we’d try a few players in different positions, some forced but some tactical to try and get the best out of the boys, encouraging start and within the first few minutes we’d forced a corner and from the cleared ball Joe D hit a cracking left foot shot from outside the area which ricocheted off the cross bar, this seemed to inspire a bit of confidence which has lacked over the past couple of weeks and the players started to relax on the ball, get their heads up and get passing as I know they can.

As the game passed with more and more possession confidence also grew allowing both wingers Rob and Alex to find space, then from a resulting corner the ref awarded a penalty, unable to place the ball on the spot George moved it to one side only for the ref to put the ball back in the hole, sorry penalty spot. Unable to get a firm shot off the goalkeeper easily saved, this then gave Burntwood a little more confidence, finding space and getting a few shots off with James at right back throwing himself at everything, then the ball was put through for a one on one with the keeper Josh but he sprung off his line and made himself big ownly for the ball to rebound off him and get cleared up by our centre back in previous games this may have ended in a goal but this made us stronger and some good passing between Jack, Marcus and George opened up their defense and George produced a quality shot equaled by a quality save only for Alex to be on hand to fire from the right into the top left corner.

Pushing for a second as I knew we’d have a difficult second half against the wind and up hill, we hit the post twice and the cross bar again but it was pleasing to see that with this confidence we were creating from all over the pitch.

Second half and it was as tough as expected but we were still creating our chances, Elliot had to come off with a pulled groin so slight reshuffle at the back and Matt did well to keep it tight, but a loose ball in midfield and a clean shot to Burntwood making it 1-1 again encouraging to see the lads didn’t drop their heads and went straight in looking for a winner,¬† from this point the game became end to end stuff with our defense doing most of the work and was glad to hear the final whistle, 1-1 first point and hopefully we can now start to build from this performance, but who knows.

well done lads.
